* A facade or façade is generally one exterior side of a building, usually, but not always, the front. The word comes from the French language, literally meaning "frontage" or "face". In architecture, the facade of a building is often the most important from a design standpoint, as it sets the tone for the rest of the building. Many facades are historic, and local zoning regulations or other laws greatly restrict or even forbid their alteration.
The French word 'façade' originates from Latin; 'facies' meaning 'face' or 'appearance'. For buildings, displaying spaces of products, show-windows and signboards of shops can be all considered as elements for the 'face' of a building when compared to human body. Overall idea of types and qualities of products in a particular shops can be achieved by their façade. Thus the purposes of it are to catch passers-by's attention and to lead them into the shops and eventually to make them purchase their products.

Both Dong-Wook Kim and Ji-Won Lim, two presented artists in this exhibition, deal with the idea of inter-relationship between self perception of individuals and response to the individuals from their surroundings. Although two artists have quite contrasting background in terms of their path of artistic education, yet it is noticeable that their use of colour and style of strokes are quite comparable and their works are pretty well-harmonising with each other. And so are the drawn countenances. One of the main issues in their works is to show how one¡¯s trauma forms one¡¯s character. Mixed feelings of self-understood imperfection, one¡¯s weakness that they never want to unmask before others, their desire that cannot be explicitly confessed, and a narcissistic drive are moulding the faces in the paintings. If ¡®façade¡¯ works as the bait to customers in marketing, the visages of their art works are the ones to audiences which invite them into the characters' psychological turbulence. However, unlike thoroughly embellished façades for shops, the characters¡¯ facial expressions are rather empty and lost. Every those of whom with discouraging experiences in any forms of human interactions can easily understand those expressions. Characters appeared in Dong-Wook and Ji-Won¡¯s works are in depressed silence yet quite loud in their vivid colour and active strokes and they are desperately calling for audiences' attentions.
From this exhibition, I hope to create a discourse of the psychoanalytical meaning of ¡®face¡¯ that we are wearing in our daily lives. Consciously or unconsciously, people constantly need confirmation of 'self' from other¡¯s perception as we all also perceive and naturally make an initial judgement upon others by glancing at their appearances. We all prepare to be seen by others. What we desire to achieve in producing and presenting our faces to others, how we want to be perceived by others, how we understand ourselves in those brief but complex moments of encounters are the questions that I would like to raise from this exhibition. I hope this exhibition could be a pretty catchy ¡®façade¡¯ to the audience that invites them not only into the exhibiting space but also into a time for self-reflection by asking themselves why and how they wear their 'faces'.
