< ´Ð ¸¶Å·(Nick Marking) > I was born into a Yangban family and was always afforded the opportunity to learn about and experience many different facets of society. From the age when I could barely crawl I was supplied with crayons and pencils. I can remember drawing for hours with my brothers on the backs of used test papers my father brought home from SkagitValleyJuniorCollege, where he taught Philosophy. My brothers all had some talent, too, and our parents (particularly our mother) nurtured this with oil painting lessons. We were also supplied with a steady stream of art books dealing with subjects ranging from the great European masters to African tribal art. I don¡¯t remember when I first realized that I was an artist. I have no doubt that it happened quite early in my life, reinforced by several photographic appearances in local papers displaying my art work before I had even reached puberty. Powerful stuff for an impressionable youth!

When our family moved to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan I received water color lessons from the best instructor I have ever had the privilege of being taught by – John Heath, an excellent naturalist painter. During this time, I also first learned to make paper mache masks, something I still love to do. By the time I reached High School on the cold plains of NorthDakotaIhaddecidedthatIneededtostuffmybrainwithasmanydiverseimagesandexperiencesaspossible,believinginthesurrealistmannerthattheseinfluenceswouldpercolateinmysubconscioustoemergelaterasinspirationforworksofart.ItseemedtobeworkingformeasIwontheMinot,NorthDakotaMayor¡¯sawardforsculptureasajuniorinHighSchool.ArtschoolatBriarCliffCollegeinSiouxCityIowawasarudeawakening.Ihad never imagined in my naïveté that art could be so structured and elitist. As a true child of the American 70s, I rebelled against the instructor¡¯s insistence that all students should become minimalist field painters and also against the Eurocentric nature of the curriculum.

I dropped out of school and began a 10-year string of manual labor jobs: construction worker, meat cutter, cabinet maker, airplane painter and warehouse laborer to name a few. During this time I continued making art with many different media: pen and ink, acrylic, paper mache¡¦ and I learned airbrush painting on motorcycle tanks. When I moved to NewMexicoin1979,IwasgreatlyinfluencedbythemythologicalSouthwestIndianartstyle.IenteredtheNewMexicostatefairyearlyandwontwoprizesformyairbrushpaintingsofOrchidsandhadmyfirstworksdisplayedingalleries.AfterreturningtoTechnicalSchoolandstudyinglasersIgravitatedtowardsthecomputerasanartmedium.
Since my move to Portland,OregontoworkforIntelCorporation, the computer has been my primary medium, although I have also greatly enjoyed the yearly color crayon contest at the Brasserie Montmarte and made a set of masks for the Spanish language Theatro Milagro production of Jardin de Suenos. My latest works have been a series of Venetian style paper mache masks and a series of automatic surrealist paintings with Copic pens with the intent of achieving some of the spontaneity that computer artwork lacks.
