Sowing the empty canvas
ºó ĵ¹ö½º¿¡ »Ñ¸®±â
¡°¡¦they are like chaff which the wind blows away.¡± (Psalm 1:4)
¡°Husk and Ash¡± is a participatory installation that invites visitors to paint (or ¡°sow¡±) a large standing rice husk canvas with handfuls of rice husk ash.
Building upon the symbolic resonance of husk (chaff) as a worthless byproduct of grain processing, the piece alludes to the façade of prosperity and well-being paraded by the North Korean regime; a façade held together by the vacuum of dictatorial deprivation: of information, of sustenance. ¡°Husk and Ash¡± literally inverts the Biblical verse, utilizing the power of air suction to hold the materials in a state of tensed suspension.
About the artist: Romy Achituv is an Israeli-American interdisciplinary artist whose projects explore interactive possibilities in socially engaged art. His work has been widely and internationally exhibited, and has been acquired by major international public and private collections. He has been the recipient of a number of significant prizes and honors, including the European Media Arts Festival Critics Choice Award, ID magazine design award, the Greenwall Foundation Grant and the Harpo Foundation grant. His recent public works include co-designing a new wing for the Ghetto Fighters Museum in Israel (http://m--a--p.net/yizkor/Yizkor.htm), and co-producing The Garden Library – an open air library for refugees and migrant workers in Tel Aviv, Israel (http://www.thegardenlibrary.org/). Technologies developed by Romy Achituv have been patented by Interval Research Corp. in Palo Alto, California, and by New York University. Romy Achituv is currently a WCU professor of New Media at HongIk University.
