전시소개/Introduction

  한국과 일본, 대만 (중국 또한)은 ‘동아시아’로 묶여 불리곤 한다. 분명 동아시아 삼국은 지리적 권역을 넘어서는 오랜 문화적 습합(習合)의 전통을 공유하고 있다. 과거사에서 비롯된 갈등이 영토 분쟁 등으로 이어지기도 하지만 동아시아 삼국이 몇 차례의 국제 전쟁과 근대 이후 일본 제국주의의 발호를 제외하면 비교적 평화로이 각자의 체제를 유지, 발전해왔음은 특기할 만하다. 또한 유럽 통합에서 보듯 글로벌 경제는 동아시아권의 블록화를 수반하고 있다. 그간 쏟아진 학계의 동아시아 담론은 이러한 현실의 반영에 다름 아니다.

《Common Sense of the East》전에서 한국, 일본, 대만의 큐레이터 3인과 7인 작가는 지금 동아시아를 살아가는 이들이 지닌 ‘공통감’에 주목한다. 이는 동아시아에 대한 추상적 담론이 결여한 감각적 특성을 예술적 실천을 통해 규명하려는 시도이다. 기획자와 작가들은 ‘동아시아성(性)’ 또는 ‘동아시아적 가치’에 대해 질문과 토론의 과정을 거치고 작가들은 각자의 발견을 특유의 개별적이고 독립적인 목소리로 드러낼 것이다. 비록 그들의 사유와 작업이 동아시아라는 이름의 허구와 동아시아적 가치의 공허함을 폭로할지라도 그것은 우리가 공통으로 느낄 만한 교훈과 미덕을 지닌다. 함께 새로운 출발을 위해 떠날 곳이 어딘지를 확인하는 것만큼 중요한 것도 없기 때문이다. 따라서 전시에 참여하는 작가들은 각국의 상황하에서 생활하며 작업하는 것을 드러내 보이며, 서로 어떻게 살고 있는지 상황이 어떤지를 이야기와 작업을 통해 공유하며 서로 배워갈 수 있을 것이다.

  기획자 3인은 동아시아로 일컬어지는 우리 각자가 살고 있는 지역의 정치, 경제, 문화적 기반을 바탕으로 서로의 공통점과 차이점을 찾아 예술적 연대를 만들고자 한다. 참여자들의 이전 작업들은 언제나 구체적인 지역적 사건을 기반으로 보편적 정서를 이끌어낸다. 그러나 언제나 지역에 대한 문제는 번역을 요구하고, 그 번역 과정 속에서 우리는 동아시아라는 커다란 지역의 공통감을 찾을 수 있을 것이라 기대한다. 만나고, 논의하고 토론하는 이러한 작업을 통해 참여자들은 동아시아에 팽배한 증오의 감정을 예술로 녹이고, 평화와 화합을 기원한다. 참여자들은 또한 자신의 개인적 작업이 다른 이들과 만나는 작은 움직임으로부터 나아가 ‘예술적’으로 또 다른 역할을 할 수 있기를 기대한다. 서준호(스페이스 오뉴월)

 

  South Korea, Japan and Taiwan(China) are classified as 'East Asia'. Clearly, the three East Asia countries share a long cultural tradition of compromise beyond the geographical dimension. Conflicts of the past made some problems still ongoing like territorial dispute. But East of Asia countries relatively peacefully maintain a system of self-development has played is remarkable. As like European integration, the global economy is induced economic integration in East Asia. East Asian discourse of academia reflects aforementioned reality.

《Common Sense of the East》project which will be made by Three curators and seven artists in three countries(South Korea, Japan and Taiwan)- attention to the 'common sense' of East Asians. Curators try to define practices of the sensible characters of abstract discourse of the East Asia. They discuss and debate about meaning of 'The East Asia' or ' value of East Asian' and then to creative Expression. Although their works could reveal the fictional name of East Asia or would expose the void value of the common facts of the east Asia, It has lessons and virtues to they can feel in common. It is most important to know where the starting point for the beginning.

  Three curators want to find the similarities and differences of each other and finally make artistic solidarity based on political, economical and cultural things in East Asia the area in which we live. Artists can make us sympathize to against a local background event. But local problems always demand interpretation about themselves’ issue, so we could anticipate that we are able to find some common senses of East Asia in a process. By this project, we hope to communicate and make concord by discussing and meeting. Also, we expect that our small efforts can make to artistic and social effects among the countries of the East Asia. _Juno Seo(Director of Space O'newwall)
