뉴미디어 아트란 새로운 매체 기술을 아트에 접목시킨 분야를 통칭하며, 예술의 개념, 시장, 교육 및 전반적 시스템에 변화를 일으킬 수 있는 많은 가능성을 내포하고 있다. 뉴미디어 아트의 ‘New (새로움)’이라는 단어의 자체의 상대성이 시사하듯이, 뉴미디어 아트는 각 시대에서 ‘새롭다’고 여겨지는 기술과 끊임없이 접목하며 발전해왔다. 뉴미디어 아티스트가 새로운 기술에 관심을 가지는 이유는 현대 아티스트에게 있어 그들의 삶을 둘러싼 모든 것들이 그들의 현실을 표현할 수 있는 작품의 재료 및 소재가 되기 때문이다. 또한 이러한 새로운 기술들은 작품을 단지 만들기 위한 수단으로서가 아닌, 기존의 작품과 예술에 대한 철학적인 개념에 도전하는 여러 가지 특징들을 가지고 있다. 또한 현대인들에게 중요한 커뮤니케이션 수단이 된 영상, 소셜 미디어, 인터넷과 같은 뉴미디어와 모바일 기기의 보급은 많은 작가들에게 새로운 방식으로 소통의 가능성을 열어주었다.
본 전시에서는 국제적으로 활발하게 활동 중인 14명의 뉴미디어 아티스트의 작품을 2주 간격으로 소개할 예정이다. Sarah Choo, Hans Gindlesberger, Joe Hedges, Sanja Hurem, Colby Jennings, Kang Su Jeong, Mark Kleine, Helen Koo, Liss LaFleur, Kim Miller, Sean Mullan, Elisabeth Pellathy, Joe Ren, Borja Rodríguez이 참여 예정으로 런던의 테이트 모던 (TATE Modern), 뉴욕 모던아트 뮤지엄 (MoMA), IEEE 국제 심포지엄, PBS 방송사, MASS MoCA 등을 포함한 세계 미술관 및 방송사에서 소개되었으며 미국에서 뉴미디어아트 전공 교수로 재직 중인 아티스트들이 다수 참여 하였다.
New media art utilizes new media technology to create art. As the term “new” in new media art indicates how such art changes relatively with “newness,” new media art has constantly incorporated technologies considered “new” at the moment. The reason that new media artists are interested in new media technology is that contemporary artists look for their materials and subject matters in their daily lives, and they use these to express their realities. New media technologies are not only tools for work, but they also contain crucial features that may subvert philosophical concepts of “Art” and artworks. In addition, new media, including video, social media, the Internet, and smartphones, have become essential tools for communication these days, and have opened up new possibilities for communication between artists and the audience.
Our 2nd international exhibition on New Media Art, CICA New Media Art 2016 features works of international artists including Sarah Choo, Hans Gindlesberger, Joe Hedges, Sanja Hurem, Colby Jennings, Kang Su Jeong, Mark Kleine, Helen Koo, Liss LaFleur, Kim Miller, Sean Mullan, Elisabeth Pellathy, Joe Ren, and Borja Rodríguez.
Hans Gindlesberger
Hans Gindlesberger는 업스테잇 뉴욕에서 활동하는 아티스트이다. 그의 프로젝트는 일상에 존재하는 풍경들의 물질적, 사회적, 역사적, 기술적 등 여러가지 면을 사진 역사적 관점에서 탐구하고 있다.
그의 지속되는 사진, 비디오, 인스톨레이션, 뉴미디어 프로젝트들은 덴마크 오후르스의 Galleri Image, 토론토 Gallery 44, 일본 고베의 로코 산 국제 사진 페스티벌, 프랑스 아를의 the Voies Off Festival, the Flash Forward traveling exhibition, 그리고 브라질 상파울로에서 열린 FILE Media Art에서 소개되었다. 그는 브라질 벨로 리존테의 국제 사진 페스티벌, 센트럴 세인트 마틴스 예술대학교, 런던미술대학교 (University of the Arts in London), 미국의 다수 대학을 포함하여 국내외에서 특강을 하였다. 최근 그의 작품은 BLOW 사진 매거진, Diffusion, LensCulture, AintBad, 그리고 마젠타 제단에서 출간한 Flash Forward Tenth anthology에서 소개되었다. 그는 2006년 버팔로 뉴욕주립대학에서 사진 전공으로 MFA 석사를 취득하였으며 현재 빙햄턴 대학에서 사진 전공 교수로 역임 중이다.
Hans Gindlesberger lives and works in upstate New York. His projects engage a range of photographic traditions in excavating the multiple layers of landscape – physical, social, historical, and technological – that exist within everyday places.
His projects, spanning photography, video, installation, and new media, have been exhibited at Galleri Image (Aarhus, Denmark), Gallery 44 (Toronto), the Mt. Rokko International Photography Festival (Kobe, Japan), the Voies Off Festival (Arles, France), the Flash Forward traveling exhibition, and FILE Media Art (São Paulo, Brazil). He has lectured nationally and internationally at venues including the International Festival of Photography in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts in London, and numerous universities throughout the United States. Recently, his work has been published in BLOW Photography Magazine, Diffusion, LensCulture, AintBad, and the Flash Forward Tenth anthology, published by the Magenta Foundation. Gindlesberger received his MFA in photography from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 2006 and is currently Assistant Professor of Photography at Binghamton University.
Sarah Choo Jing
Sarah Choo Jing은 복합 장르 아티스트로 최근 런던대 (University College London) 슬레이드 미술대학에서 석사과정을 마쳤다. 그녀의 작품은 시간과 공간의 관계를 다루고 있으며 현대사회의 인식 가능한 순간과 특징을 묘사하고 있다. 또한 그녀의 작품은 그녀의 국제적인 경험을 바탕으로 사회 문화 규범에 대한 고찰을 담고 있다.
최근 그녀는 Sovereign Asian Art Prize 2014 수상후보에 올랐으며 2013년에는 ICON De Martell Cordon Bleu Photography Award와 Kwek Leng Joo Prize of Excellence in Still Photography Award을 수상하였다. Choo는 ArtParis at The Grand Palais, The Saatchi Gallery에서 열린 START 아트 페어, The Somerset House에서 열린 포토 런던 2015, 베를린 Collegium Hungaricum이 주관한 Cinema Total 2014, 미국 뉴멕시코주의 2013 산타페 국제 뉴미디어 페스티벌에서 싱가폴 대표로 작품을 발표하였다.
리콴유 금메달상과 미국 제4회 국제 폴룩스 어워드의 순수사진 부문 수상하였으며 2012년에는 유럽에서 열린 The Worldwide Photography Gala Awards의 3회 Julia Margaret Cameron Award의 수상후보로 오르는 등 다수의 국제 포토그래피 시상식에서 수상 및 선외 가작을 하였다.
Sarah Choo Jing is a multidisciplinary fine artist who recently achieved her MFA in Fine Art at the Slade School of Art, University College London. Focusing on the relationship between space and time, Choo’s work depicts identifiable moments and characters within contemporary society. Intentionally constructed, the artist reflects upon social and cultural norms.
Choo has recently been shortlisted as a Finalist in the Sovereign Asian Art Prize 2014. In 2013, she was awarded the ICON De Martell Cordon Bleu Photography Award and Kwek Leng Joo Prize of Excellence in Still Photography Award. The artist has since represented Singapore at ArtParis at The Grand Palais, the START Art Fair which took place at The Saatchi Gallery, Photo London 2015 which took place at The Somerset House, Cinema Total 2014, organized by Collegium Hungaricum, Berlin and The Santa Fe International New Media Festival 2013 in New Mexico, USA.
A recipient of the Lee Kuan Yew Gold Medal Award, Choo has been awarded The Photographer of The Year in the Fine Art Photography category at the 4th International Pollux Awards, USA. In 2012, she was a Finalist for the 3rd edition Julia Margaret Cameron Award, at The Worldwide Photography Gala Awards in Europe. That summer, she received several Honorable Mentions at the International Photography Awards.
Sanja Hurem
Sanja Hurem은 베를린을 기반으로 하여 국제적으로 활동하는 복합 장르 아티스트이다. 그녀는 비디오, 인스톨레이션, 사진 작업을 주로 하고있다. 그녀는 현재 독일 Plymouth University & Transart Institute에서 MFA 석사 과정 중이다. 그녀는 다문화적 경험을 바탕으로 공간의 혼돈성과 시론을 주제로 작품을 만들고 있다. 보스니아 출신 독일 아티스트로서 그녀는 작품을 통해 그녀의 정체성과 관련된 개인적, 그리고 집단적인 편견들에 대한 그녀의 생각을 담고 있다. 뉴욕의 네셔녈 아카데미 뮤지엄(National Academy Museum), 크로아티아 자그레브의 Institute for Contemporary Art, 스페인의 Tenerife Art Center에서 작품을 발표하였으며, 미국, 독일, 영국, 브라질을 포함한 여러 나라에서 작품을 발표하였다.
Sanja Hurem is an interdisciplinary visual artist working internationally with a base in Berlin. Her work encompasses video pieces, installations and photography. She is currently due to receive her MFA from Plymouth University & Transart Institute (UK/Germany). Influenced by her experience of living amid different cultures, her work deals with themes of disorientation and poetics of space. A German artist of Bosnian origin, she often uses her work on ideas of personal and collective myth and its relation to identity. Over the past years she has exhibited in a number of countries, including US, Germany, UK and Brazil. Institutions she has exhibited with include the National Academy Museum in New York, Institute for Contemporary Art in Zagreb and Tenerife Art Center in Spain.
Zhe Ren
Zhe Ren은 중국의 톈진에서 태어났다. 톈진 대학 (Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts)에서 미술을 공부하였으며 Arkansas State University에서 회화와 드로잉 전공으로 MA 석사를, Southern Illinois University Carbondale에서 2D 디지털 미디어 전공으로 MFA 석사를 취득하였다. 최근 미국 아칸소주의 존즈보로, 미주리주의 세인트루이스, 테네시주 내쉬빌, 중국 톈진에서 작품을 발표하였다.
Zhe Ren was born in Tianjin, China. He received his B.F.A degree in Sculpture from Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts, his M.A degree in painting and drawing from Arkansas State University, and M.F.A degree in 2D specializing in Digital Media from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. For the past few years he has exhibited his art work at nationally and internationally in Jonesboro Arkansas, Carbondale, and Murphysboro Illinois, St. Louis Missouri, Nashville Tennessee, and Tianjin China.
