ACC-Rijksakademie Dialogue and Exchange 2016-2017

The Asia Culture Center (ACC) in Gwangju and Rijksakademie in Amsterdam announce the launch of their preliminary joint residence exchange program with an open call for four Asia based artists to be supported by the ACC. The ACC-Rijksakademie Dialogue and Exchange pursues a new model of artist in residence program by juxtaposing two different approaches to supporting art practices that reflect the specificities of both institutions: a model with the facilities and history that its longstanding existence entails, and a model under development by a newly established culture center focusing on Asia. 
 
Divided into two three-month-long sessions, one based in Gwangju and the other in Amsterdam, this program will start in Gwangju from September 2016. Eight artists in total will take part, four selected through this open call and four selected from the Rijksakademie alumni. 
 
The ACC Library Park(http://www.acc.go.kr/en) is imagined as an innovative platform where multiple forms of resources addressing arts and culture in post-war Asia can be accessed. Conceived as a hybrid space, the ACC Library Park adopts archival, library, exhibition and research center functions and services to provide access to discourse, documentation, and objects pertaining to the diverse histories and cultures of Asia. Through creative programming and interface, the ACC Library Park also fosters the construction of innovative approaches to how these constructs can be interpreted in contemporary times. 
 
Drawing from the aforementioned ACC Library Park vision, the goal of this Gwangju session of the ACC-Rijksakademie Dialogue and Exchange is to investigate what can be brought about by exchange within fields of art practice and research and how these can be supported. To this end, the residency period in Gwangju is designed to be more of a gathering based session where participating artists are encouraged to enter into discussions with each other and engage in meetings with archive researchers, as well as specialists from other disciplines. Participants will also be introduced to the dynamic art field of Gwangju and Korea through visits to institutions, galleries and alternative spaces. 
 
Artists selected by this open call will continue the program with a session in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, where focus will be placed on the artists’ individual concerns and that can take place throughout 2017. 
 
The Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten (http://www.rijksakademie.nl) is an international residency program in Amsterdam. It aims at further developing emerging visual artists from the Netherlands and abroad by providing space for research, experiment and production. Apart from facilities such as a studio, work budget and stipend, there is a professional research and production infrastructure. Surrounded by peers from all over the world and with access to advice of artistic, theoretical and technical experts, a residency at the Rijksakademie often leads to broadening and deepening of the work. Presentation of the work and connections to an international network form a part of the residency. There is no standard program, predominant style or ideology. The Rijksakademie provides time, people and possibilities.

Program Conditions/Benefits
In Gwangju and Amsterdam participants can expect:

Participant requirements are:

• Emerging artists with some independent professional experience.
• To be able and willing to communicate in English throughout the program
• To be able to show demonstrable interest in research based practices as well as engaging with others during research processes

 
The selection process will consist of:

• Preliminary selection on application documents
• Subsequent selection based on interview and jury evaluations

 
In Gwangju participants must present:

• The report of art practices in residency within 1 month after the end of residency in Gwangju.
