2. 작가노트
2008년, 시각과 사고의 한계를 인식한 어느 날, 미에 대한 편견과 학습되고 길든 감각으로부터 벗어나기 위해, 색이 구분되지 않는 어두운 공간에서 채색을 시작했다. 이후, 하나의 관점에 빠지는 순간 놓치게 되는 많은 사실들에 대한 경계로 "Anti-Focus"라는 주제로 작품활동을 이어왔다.
최근 작품들은, 의식적 판단의 한계 너머의 어떤 존재들을 현실로 끌어내고자, 임의로 붓 개수를 정해 눈을 감고 의지에 반하거나 또는 반하려는 의지에 반하는 등, 의식적 선택에 대한 지속적 방해로 탄생했다.
예측할 수 없었던 이미지는 나에게조차 때론 혼란스럽고 엉망인 것으로 느껴져 외면하고 싶은 충동을 일으켰다. 하지만 잠시 판단의 기준을 내려놓고 작품과 마주하면, 혼란스럽고 엉망인 표면 너머에 집착이 사라진 평정의 공간을 경험한다. 그 평정은 작품 속에 있는 것이 아닌 내 안에, 또는 관객 안에 이미 실재하고 있던 공간일 것이다.
이번 전시에는 어떤 계획도 없이 직관에 따라 칠하고 드리핑한 작품들과, 사람들에게 선택받지 못한 나의 평면 작품들 중 몇 개를 선택해, 각각이 가진 물성을 최대한 수용하며 잘라 구부려 붙인 콜라주 작품들 또한 함께 전시한다.
I am pleased to present "Anti-Focus VII: In Me," the exhibition of my new works of art worked in 2020.
In 2008, one day, recognizing the limits of views and thoughts, I began painting in a dark space where colors were indistinguishable, to escape from my aesthetic prejudice and my skilled and learned sense. Since then, I have worked on the theme of "Anti-Focus" as vigilance for the phenomenon: we miss many facts when our views and thoughts fall in one perspective.
My latest works were born this way: first, I randomly picked the number of brushes and then painted with my eyes closed, repeatedly resisting my will or the will to resist my will. I wanted to bring what is beyond the edge of my consciousness into reality.
After painting, sometimes, even to me, my works of art seemed appalling and confusing. But when I put down the standard for judging beauty and was facing them for a while, I experienced a calm place where is no obsession. The peaceful space is not in my works of art, but it was already in me, or the viewers.
Also, I will display new impromptu paintings and painting collages: I arbitrarily cut my unsold paintings and, responding to each material properties of the pieces, bent and attached them to a restructured canvas frame.
