“디 언타이틀드 보이드”는 사고(思考)를 위해 만든 공간이다. 정리된 결론을 단순하게 전시한다기 보다는 새롭고 살아있는 질문을 표현해보자는 일종의 초대장을 내고 있다.
2020년, 우리 모두 새로운 경계를 고심하고 있다. 심오한 불확실성으로 급변하고 있는 세상속에서 개인의 선택과 공동의 요건이 쉴 새 없이 교차한다. 주관에 대한 근본적인 질문들이 다급해지는 순간이다: 한 사람한테 질서로 보이는 것이 또 다른 사람한테는 억압으로 보이고, 나한테 자유로 느껴지는 것이 너에게는 혼돈과 카오스로 다가온다면—너와 나, 공공과 개인, 이론과 실행 사이의 바운더리는 어디에 둘 것일까?
그리고 이 순간, 이런 이원적인 해석 자체를 넘어선 시도는 어떤 형태를 띄울 것인가?
“디 언타이틀드 보이드”의 첫 기획전인 <초월>의 아티스트들은 바로 이 마지막 질문을 탐색해볼 공간과 공연을 상상한다. 홀로 선 무용수의 퍼포먼스 역시 개인 경험의 우선과 타당성의 수행으로 볼 수 있으며, 이는 에머슨의 전통 초월주의를 그대로 반영한 듯 하다: 즉흥안무로 이루어지는 춤이 ‘자기 신뢰’의 의식으로 보이는 것이다. 그러나 일막에서 형성된 의미의 궤도가 이막에서 뒤집히며 탈구축적인 의도가 분명해지고, 몸에 부착된 센서들을 통해 움직임이 공간속 빛과 소리로 표현된다. 즉, 움직임에 의해 환경이 달라지며, 그 달라진 환경이 또 몸에 새겨지는 상호작용이 발생한다. 마침표가 아닌 쉼표만 있다.
<초월>은 과정이다, 이어지고 있는.
“The Untitled Void” is a space intended for thought, inviting the formulation of new and living questions rather than the simple display of packaged conclusions.
2020 finds us all grappling with new limits, navigating intersections of personal choice and communal necessity in a rapidly shifting global landscape now characterized first and foremost by profound uncertainty. Basic questions of subjectivity have never been more urgent: after all, if what looks like order to one person can seem like oppression to another, if what feels like freedom to me is instability and chaos to you, where do we draw boundaries of self and other, public and private, theory and practice?
And what might it look like, to try and reach past such binary distinctions in this particular moment?
The artists behind Transcendence, The Untitled Void’s inaugural exhibition, have effectively created an installation and performance that explores this very question. Read as an enactment of the primacy and relevance of individual experience, the solo dancer’s entropic journey is straightforwardly transcendental in the traditional Emersonian sense: a soloist performing a ritual of “Self Reliance.” In the second act, however, the trajectory of meaning constructed in the first is completely reversed—indicating a more deconstructionist approach—even as a series of sensors affixed to the dancer’s body translate her improvised movements into sound and light, shaping the environment around her only for it to inscribe itself back onto her, in turn. There are no periods here, only commas.
Transcendence is process, ongoing.
