Introduction
Organizing the environment according to the set values of the media
¡¶Media, Configuration Setting¡· is a special exhibition that introduces works interpreting and re-implementing the existing media and environment into those with different attributes depending on the set value by the artist, and the critical articles on them. The fact that each writer has a main media means that he or she adapts it to a specific sense. Using it differently is nothing new , because exploring a media is very natural. However, setting different media values is another story. Different set values imply a change in its attributes. It is a kind of change in form that the existing media changes to different attributes by the set value. Like objects that can change into solid, gas, and liquid, the fluid media can drastically transform the environment to suit its properties.
The exhibition, held from September 22 to October 31 at the Seongbuk Young Art Space (Seongbuk Museum of Art), has been planned as part of the ‘2020 Seongbuk N Artist Contest’ exhibition program called ‘NEXT.’ The ‘Seongbuk N Artist Contest’ is a supporting project that has been in place since 2013 for creators who attempt experimental art. To mark the seventh anniversary this year, a review program called ‘Write Now’ has been established to expand the scope of support for creators and conduct research/criticism matching with selected writers to produce and promote discourse, followed by the exhibition program ‘NEW,’ and the creative support forum ’N-table’ will be held sequentially after the exhibition program NEXT.
The exhibition has five creators selected from the ‘2020 Seongbuk N Artist Contest’ (Artist: HyunJeong Kimbak, SeoYeon Park, EuYoung Hong/ reviewer: JeongEun Oh, Munumi). HyunJeong Kimbak has been working on presenting a mix of photos, installations and videos, exploring the possibilities of expansion of the photographic media. She also introduces the series ¡´Operators, Painters, Editors(2020)¡µ that view the photography ‘media’ as a material for image production and use it as a kind of a ‘tool.’ The images created through the filming equipment scatter to pieces, and soon become a piece of installation and hand-held sculpture. Furthermore, just like a paint on a palette, the processed picture as a material for the image is placed on a flat surface as a ‘painter,’ and soon faces a scene where it is transformed through various software programs, moves through space, and attempts for a picture to become a painting through moving images. Park uses the ‘status’ between plane and three dimensions, focusing on the study of painting as supporter and its narrativity. SeoYeon Park uses flat elements of already existing canvas as a three-dimensional or as a form with motion in the video, and scattered scenes in the works everywhere. If the events contained in crime fiction usually capture the absurd aspects of individuals and society, it induces them to deduce the rings of narratives all over the scene like a hidden picture following the detective character ‘Jelly J.’ As we look at the works along the large and small clues, the viewers are able to encounter stories in the works that are read in various directions and order. EuYoung Hong recreates the scene of Jungneung 3-dong, which is real but in fact nonexistent. “Non(existent)” here refers to stories that are not physically drawn but are real (or regarded to have been so). The artist’s work is combined with non-material elements such as changes in objects that grow, such as ‘Images embodied by imagining stories,’ moments of conversation, reflections in mirrors, scattered light, and stereoscopic installations. The kind of scenery that makes you listen to the sound without sound and imagine the scene without an object fills the familiar scene and the imaginary gap filling the space of Jungneung 3-dong.
Under the title of ¡´Index on the Territory¡µ, Munumi(Taehwi Kim), who participates in the review, attempts to read the works centering on the index of HyunJeong Kimbak and EuYoung Hong’s works. Kimbak’s works are described as ‘an escape from the territory of the index, repeatedly refuting and supplementing the areas of drawings and symbols’: Hong’s works are interpreted as a work and scene ‘free from the index of the territory.’ Through this process, Kim attempts to draw works in different environments as indicators. Another reviewer, JeongEun Oh, joined in the exhibition with her two writings. One called ¡´Pop-up Images of Painting: Review for the creating sculpture of hidden images on canvas¡µ is like a detective deducing Park’s work and written with a critical point of view, and the other, ¡´Configuration Setting of¡¶Media, Configuration Setting¡·¡µ, is an article on the analysis of online VR exhibition additionally prepared for this exhibition. The latter provides a kind of a preview on viewing the exhibition hall as if it were teleporting through on-screen touch and switch, rather than an alternative offline exhibitions in which physical bodies intervene in space.
In ¡¶Media, Configuration Setting¡·, individual work and text, which differ in the setting values of the works’ media and meet with the space to create their own environment, are seen as a kind of a performance. We hope that this scenery, which constantly resets the environment and is not revealed in the stopped scene, could face the real audience beyond the boundaries between online and offline.
