Objects of function
‘Balance within Imbalance’

In the modern era, the meaning and roles of furniture have gradually broadened to serve a greater purpose. Variations are being created with furniture representing not simply a medium that decorates space or reveals personality. Furniture or objects have deviated from basic roles or frameworks to be more encompassing in human life. They have broadened the potential in expression as a formative & functional language.

The ‘Objects of function' started with questions stemming from a gap between the purpose of an object vs. its means of expression for the creator. The harmony of both usage of furniture and creative world was an important goal to me as I formulated a formative language that combines both.

‘Balance within Imbalance’ is a formative language that utilizes the contrast between the formativeness shown by a crossing structure of verticality and horizontality as well as the properties of different materials. It is a story about the Imbalanced forms within a balance, in other words a two sided story.

Through the works, I express the crossing structures of verticality and horizontality, with the resulting intersections the object is composed. This secondarily demonstrated as a visual contrast between the ‘balance’ of the vertical structure with the ‘imbalanced’ horizontal cross structure elements. A tertiary method of expressing this design intent is by employing two contrasting materials such as artificial and natural elements. Such a visual and conceptual expression is intended to result in the expression of the ‘humanistic side but also the artificial or human made properties’.

Based on the above theme of balance and non-balance, I strived to demonstrate this with various levels of depth and forms. The meaning of furniture or objects having dual or two sides was key. I hope to change the perception of the public to see furniture as not just a merely preforming function but also having artistic value to enrich the lives that interact with it.
