ÇѹݵµÀÇ ³²ÂÊ ³¡ÀÚ¶ô, Å뿵¿¡¼­ ³ª°í »ý(ßæ)À» ¸¶Ä£ ÀüÇõ¸²(1915~2010) È­¹éÀÌ ÀÛ°íÇÑÁö ¾î´Àµ¡ 12³â, Å뿵ÀÇ ¾Õ¹Ù´Ù¿¡¼­ ¸Õ¹Ù´Ù¿Í ¿¬°áµÈ ¼¼°è¸¦ ´À³¢°íÀÚ Çß´ø ±×¸¦ ȸ°íÇϸç Seoul Art Lab GalleryÀÇ Ã¹ °³°üÀüÀ» ¼±º¸ÀδÙ. ÀüÇõ¸² È­¹éÀÇ ÀÛǰ¿¡´Â Çѱ¹ÀÇ ÀüÅëÀû ´ë»óµé°ú ¼­±¸ÀÇ ¿©·¯ Ãß»ó ¾ç½ÄµéÀÌ ¼­·Î ÀÚÀ¯·Ó°Ô ¾î¿ì·¯Á® ÀÖ´Ù. ±×´Â Çѱ¹ ¹ÎÈ­ÀÇ ÀüÅëÀû ¹®¾ç°ú »öä, ±â¹ýÀ» ±â¹ÝÀ¸·Î Ä­µò½ºÅ°¿Í ¸óµå¸®¾ÈÀÇ Ãß»óÀ» ¿¬»ó½ÃŰ´Â ´ëĪ, ±ÕÇü, À²µ¿ µîÀÇ Á¶Çü ¿ø¸®¸¦ ÅëÇØ Çѱ¹ °íÀ¯ÀÇ Ãß»óÀûÀÎ ¹Ì¸¦ °³Ã´Çß´Ù. »Ó¸¸ ¾Æ´Ï¶ó ±×°¡ Çѱ¹ÀÇ ÇÇÄ«¼Ò¶ó ºÒ¸®°Ô µÈ ÀÌÀ¯ ¿ª½Ã, ÇÑ È­¸é¿¡ ¿©·¯ ¹æÇâÀÇ ½Ã°¢À» µ¿½Ã¿¡ ´ã¾Æ³»´Â Å¥ºñÁòÀÇ ¸ùŸÁÖ(montage) ±â¹ýÀ» ¿¬»ó½Ã۸ç, Çѱ¹Àû ¼­Á¤¼º¿¡ ¹ÙÅÁÀ» µÐ ÀڽŸ¸ÀÇ µ¶Æ¯ÇÑ Ãß»ó ȸȭ¸¦ ±¸ÃàÇ߱⠶§¹®ÀÌ´Ù. ÀÌ´Â ´Ü¼øÈ÷ ¼­±¸ ¹Ì¼úÀÇ Çѱ¹Àû ¹ø¿ªÀÌ ¾Æ´Ñ, ¼­±¸ÀÇ ¹Ì¼ú°ú Çѱ¹ ¹Ì¼ú »çÀÌÀÇ À§°è¸¦ Çã¹°¸ç ÀüÇõ¸²¸¸ÀÇ Ãß»óÀ¸·Î ‘ÀüÀ¯(Appropriation)’ ÇÑ °ÍÀ̾ú´Ù. À̹ø Seoul Art Lab GalleryÀÇ Ã¹ °³°üÀü¿¡¼­´Â ÀüÇõ¸² È­¹éÀÇ Àü¼º±â¶ó ÇÒ ¼ö ÀÖ´Â 1980³â´ë¿Í 1990³â´ë ÀÛǰµé, ±×¸®°í ÀüÇõ¸² »ý¾Ö ³ë³â 2000³â´ë ÀÌÈÄ ±×ÀÇ ´ëÇ¥ÀÛÀÌ¶ó ¿©°ÜÁú ¸¸ÇÑ °ÍµéÀ» Áß½ÉÀ¸·Î ¼±º¸ÀδÙ. 1980³â´ë ÀÛ(íÂ)Àº Çѱ¹ÀÇ ÀÚ¿¬ÀÌ Á¶ÇüÀû Ãß»óÀ¸·Î Á¶È­·Ó°Ô ¾î¿ì·¯Áø ‘Korea Fantasy’ ½Ã¸®Áî·Î ±¸¼ºµÇ¸ç, ÀüÅëÀû »öä ´ëºñ¿Í ¹ÎÈ­Àû ¾Æ¸§´Ù¿òÀÌ ¼­¸° 1990³â´ë ÀÛǰÀÌ À̾îÁø´Ù. 2000´ë¿¡ À̸£·¯ dz°æ°ú ´ë»ó, Æò¸é°ú ÀÔü¸¦ ³Ñ³ªµé¸ç ±×°¡ µµ´ÞÇÑ °­·ÄÇÑ Á¶Çü °¨°¢°ú Ãß»ó¹ÌÀÇ Á¤Á¡À» °¨»óÇÒ ¼ö ÀÖ´Ù. ÀüÇõ¸² È­¹éÀº ±¸»ó°ú Ãß»óÀÇ °æ°è¿¡¼­ ÀÚ½ÅÀÌ º» ¼¼°èÀÇ ´ë»óÀ» ÁÖ°üÀûÀ¸·Î È­¸é À§¿¡ ÀçâÁ¶Çϸç, ¹ÎÁ·ÀÇ Çâ±â¸¦ °£Á÷ÇÏ°í »öäÀÇ ´ëºñ¿Í ÇüÅÂÀÇ Á¶È­¸¦ ÅëÇØ, »õ·Î¿î Çѱ¹Àû Ãß»ó°ú ±¹Á¦ÀûÀÎ ¹Ì¸¦ ½ÇÇöÇß´Ù. À̹ø Àü½Ã¸¦ ÅëÇØ 20¼¼±â ÁßÈĹݠ¸ð´õ´ÏÁò Ãß»ó ¿­Ç³ÀÌ ºÒ´ø ½Ã±â, µ¶ÀÚÀûÀ¸·Î ¼­±¸¿Í Çѱ¹ ¹Ì¼ú »çÀÌ °£±ØÀ» Çã¹°¸ç, Çѱ¹Àû Á¶Çü°¨°¢°ú Çö´ëÈ­ÀÇ ±æÀ» ¸ð»öÇß´ø ÀÛ°¡ ÀüÇõ¸² È­¹éÀÇ ÀáÀçÀû °¡Ä¡¿¡ ÁÖ¸ñÇϰí, 21¼¼±â Çѱ¹ ȸȭ°¡ ÁøÀϺ¸Çϱâ À§ÇÑ »õ·Î¿î Çѱ¹Àû ÆÇŸÁö¸¦ Á¦¾ÈÇϰíÀÚ ÇÑ´Ù. 

‘Looking at the waves off the coast of Chungmu, I sometimes think that it could be the waves from Scandinavia, the Mediterranean Sea, or Alaska. And I feel the world off the coast of Chungmu.’

Chun Hyuk-Lim (1915-2010) was born and passed away in Tong Yeong, the southern tip of Korea. 12 years after his death, ‘Seoul Art Lab Gallery’ will be presenting the first opening exhibition in September 2022, recalling the artist who desired to feel the world connected to the far sea from the coast of Tong Yeong. In the works of artist Chun Hyuk-Lim, Korean traditional objects are harmoniously and freely mingled in various Western abstraction styles. Reminding us of Kandinsky and Mondrian’s abstraction, he pioneered the beauty of distinguished Korean abstraction through the principles of formation, such as symmetry, balance, and rhythm, based on the traditional patterns, colors, and techniques of Korean folklore painting. In addition, the reason why he was called Picasso of Korea was that he built his own unique abstract painting with Korean lyricism by Cubism montage technique that simultaneously captured the views in various directions on one screen. This is not just a Korean version of Western art, but an exclusive ‘Appropriation’ of Chun Hyuk-Lim ‘s abstraction, breaking down the hierarchy between Western and Korean art. The first opening exhibition of ’Seoul Art Lab/Gallery’ presents artworks from the 1980s to 1990s, works of Chun Hyuk-Lim’s prime time, and the representative works of his later years of life in the 2000s. 1980s section is consisted of the ‘Korea Fantasy’ series in which Korea’s nature is harmoniously combined with a formative abstraction. Then, it is followed by 1990s artworks with traditional color contrast and the beauty of folklore painting. In the 2000s, you can see the peak of the intense formative sense and abstract beauty that he reached across the landscape, objects, planes, and stereograms. Artist Chun Hyuk-Lim recreated the world that he observed in his own way on the canvas at the boundary between figurative and abstract art, and realized new Korean abstraction and international beauty by maintaining the traditional scent of his people with contrasting colors and harmonizing forms. Through this moment, we would like you to focus on the potential value of artist Chun Hyuk-Lim, who independently sought a way of Korean formative expression and modernization by breaking down the gap between Western and Korean art during the mid 20th century to the late 20th century when modernist abstraction was blowing. Through this exhibition, we would like to propose a new ‘Korean fantasy’ to take Korean painting in the 21st century to the next level.
