The whole that only shows the parts it allows
The part we think we've seen its entirety
We live in the age of Instagram.
My individual works, which I hope will draw attention to their individual stories, form an irony where only parts of the stories are told in the exhibition [READING ACTIVELY _stories @squares].
Somewhere in the irony lies the interest and approach of the visitors.
The exhibition [READING ACTIVELY _stories @squares].at Gallery Dos is a follow-up to [Seeing separately_this is THE story], the solo exhibition in January, which opposed the trend of imposing happiness and offered a new perspective on unhappiness and the need to see the individual stories of all beings separately.
In this exhibition, I will explore the self-defined meaning of unhappiness and talk about the practice and feasibility of ‘seeing separately’.
Leo Tolstoy's novel Anna Karenina begins with the following sentence. "All happy families are alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." It means that everyone's unhappiness is different, and that unhappiness is more of a personal narrative than happiness. The individuality of unhappiness increases the difficulty of understanding it.
The premise of seeing separately, which is ‘being different from each other’, creates in itself the condition of "elusiveness”. Therefore, we cannot look at them separately without reading them ‘actively’. Furthermore, even with sufficient effort, there must be gaps that we cannot read. This means that the state we ‘understand’ is always somewhere in between the gaps.
Especially when we share individual unhappiness with others, the speaker decides how much of his or her unhappiness to reveal, taking into account the psychology and experience of the listener. The listener offers hasty consolation with a pretence of understanding in proportion to the speaker's revelation, so that knowledge and understanding between the speaker and the other are illusory.
We have to ask, then, whether any interaction between object and object is really different from the very limited display and distorted understanding that are the problems of the Instagram era. Rather, the Instagram square is perhaps the most honest form of (supposed) "understanding between objects".
